Build Your First Resume in ClearHire

Building your first resume in ClearHire means turning your structured profile into a formatted, exportable CV by choosing a template, selecting which sections to show, previewing the result, and downloading it. Because the content already lives in your profile, this step is mostly about presentation: how your existing experience, education, and skills should look on the page for a specific opportunity.

If you have not built a profile yet, do that first — the resume builder has nothing to format without it.

Step 1: Open the resume builder

Open the resume builder from your dashboard. You will see your profile content ready to be arranged, plus a gallery of professional templates.

Step 2: Pick a template

Choose a template that fits the role and industry. ClearHire offers multiple professional layouts; a clean, single-column design is a safe default for roles that pass through applicant tracking systems, while a more visual layout can suit design or creative roles. You can switch templates later without losing content, since the content comes from your profile.

Step 3: Choose which sections to include

Not every job needs every section. Use section control to:

  1. Toggle sections on or off (for example, hide Awards for an entry-level application).
  2. Reorder sections so the most relevant one sits near the top.
  3. Select which individual entries appear, tailoring the resume to the job.

This per-job tailoring is the main reason a structured profile beats a static document — you adapt the output without rewriting the source.

Step 4: Preview

Preview the resume to check spacing, page breaks, and length. Aim for clarity: most resumes read best at one to two pages. Confirm that dates line up, bullets are concise, and the most important experience is visible without scrolling.

Step 5: Export

When you are happy with the layout, export:

  • PDF — the right choice for sending to employers and uploading to job portals, because it preserves the exact layout everywhere.
  • DOCX — the right choice when you (or a recruiter) need to edit the text in a word processor afterward.

For format trade-offs and troubleshooting, see export your resume as PDF or DOCX.

Step 6: Check it against a job

Before you apply, run the resume through the ATS resume checker. Paste the job description, see how your keywords align, and adjust your skills or bullet wording where it makes honest sense. The checker offers guidance, not a guarantee of passing any specific employer's system.

Tips for a strong first resume

  • Lead with relevance. Put the experience that matches the job first.
  • Keep bullets tight. One line each, focused on results.
  • Match the language of the role. Mirror real keywords from the job post — without stuffing.
  • Export PDF to apply, DOCX to collaborate. Pick the format for the task at hand.

FAQ

Where does the resume content come from?

Entirely from your profile. The builder formats and arranges that content; it does not store separate copies you must maintain.

Can I make different resumes for different jobs?

Yes. Tailor each one by choosing a template, toggling sections, and selecting entries. The underlying profile stays the same.

Which export format should I use?

Use PDF to apply (it preserves layout) and DOCX when the file needs further editing. Details are in the export guide.

Does ClearHire write the resume for me?

No. ClearHire formats your real information and offers tools like the ATS checker and cover-letter generator. The facts and wording remain yours, which keeps the resume honest.

Will switching templates lose my edits?

No. Content is stored in your profile, so changing the template re-renders the same information in a new layout.
